Other pieces included works by  Laura Kavanaugh and Ian Birse, as well and GEMS members Ian Knopke and Neil Middleton.

 +Located in Room E-230A at the Strathcona Music Building of the Schulich School of Music, the faculty, graduate students, and research assistants of the Music Technology Area will develop frameworks and tools for creating distributed digital music libraries.

 +Research topics will include: optical music recognition system, search engine for audio files, creating music library portals, best practices for music score scanning, automatic metadata creation, audio digitization, storage and bandwidth issues, and music information retrieval.

 +A research laboratory, the [[http://www.music.mcgill.ca/musictech/spcl|Sound Processing and Control Lab]] (**SPCL**, pronounced "special") has been set up by the Music Technology Group at McGill.

 +The SPCL occupies two rooms in the Electronic Music Studio (EMS) (Strathcona Music Building, East Wing, 5th floor), and consists of several networked workstations (Linux and Windows PCs and Macintosh), gestural controllers and alternate instruments (Buchla Lightning II, Big Briar Theremin, Yamaha WX5 and VL70m module, Tactex controller, Wacom 12x12" tablet, etc.).

This grant will support research on human-computer interaction and music.

 +Assistant Professor **Dr. Ichiro Fujinaga**, currently a professor at Peabody Conservatory of Music/John Hopkins University, will join the Music Technology Group at McGill in August.

 +Dr. Fujinaga is a graduate from Music Technology at McGill and also holds degrees in Percussion/Music theory, and Mathematics, from the University of Alberta.

 +Dr Fujinaga's main research interests concern Optical music recognition, Music perception, and Machine learning.

 +The NIME Conference is the leading international meeting on all aspects related to new musical instrument design. Past editions of the conference had taken place during the ACM CHI 2001, Seattle, and at the MediaLab Europe, Dublin, May 2002.
